Tim Halloran has been studying martial arts for over 30 years and runs a Wing Chun kung fu school in Leeds.
Wing Chun is a close quarters martial art designed for dealing with stronger and larger opponents. It’s main focus in on standing fighting, using principles of economy of motion and minimum movement.
It is a good martial art to learn in a short time and can give you some of the simplest strategies for dealing with an attacker.
Wing Chun’s strengths lie in its simplicity. It uses low kicks and concentrates on fast strikes which can end an attack very quickly. It is always better to avoid or de-escalate a potential attack if possible. But if it isn’t possible it’s good to have some techniques and skills up your sleeve should you be unable to avoid a confrontation.
Session
A typical private session will depend on your needs. Depending on your requirements, we can work through some of the most useful self defence techniques, or build a more comprehensive program.
The fastest way to stop an attacker is to strike towards the most vulnerable parts of the body, such as the knees, groin and eyes. This requires little force/strength and has the maximum impact. Other more subtle techniques can also be used, such as wrist locks and breakaway techniques.
A lot of force can be generated through the correct use and alignment of the body. So even a small person can generate a lot of force when they know how to use their body to maximum effect. This can be built up through training practices starting with your correct posture (standing practice) and moving on to the movements connected to your body.
A typical punch is usually only thrown with a small amount force (compared to the body weight), using only the strength in the arm. But when you learn how use your body weight, and the force generated from correct connection with the ground, you can multiple this force many times.
