Private Self Defence Classes in Leeds

If you’re looking for private self defence in Leeds, our one-to-one training is built around Wing Chun Kung Fu. Wing Chun is a practical martial art designed for real-world fight or flight situations. Wing Chun focuses on economy of motion, minimum movement, and direct responses. This makes it ideal for self defence rather than sport or competition.

Wing Chun was the original style studied by Bruce Lee and is specifically designed to work under pressure. Instead of relying on strength, speed, or flexibility, it teaches you how to stay calm, protect yourself, and respond efficiently when it matters most. This makes it highly effective for beginners, adults with no martial arts background, and anyone who wants realistic self defence skills they can trust.

Private self defence training allows sessions to be tailored entirely around you — your confidence level, personal safety concerns, and real-life scenarios. Based in Leeds, our private Wing Chun self defence sessions prioritise awareness, positioning, close-range defence, and automatic responsiveness.

Wing Chun’s drills and practices allow your body to react instantaneously. This is the best form of self defence, where you don’t have time to think about what you’re going to do.

Wing Chun Kung Fu For Self Defence

The techniques in Wing Chun are for life threatening situations, rather than for sport. Anyone can deliver a devastating blow to an attacker using strikes to the knees, groin and eyes. This is the most efficient way to disarm an attacker. Wing Chun’s effectiveness is built on its principles of economy of motion and minimum movement. Why use long elaborate moves when a simple strike will do?! Wing Chun can be learned fairly quickly too, and its focus is on straight line attacks, simultaneous attack and defence and low kicks.

My Experience

My martial arts background includes Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Ninjitsu, Iaido, Kali and Aikido. However, it was Wing Chun Kung Fu that I have studied for the longest (over 30 years now). I believe Wing Chun offers one of the best systems to prepare anyone for a self defence scenario.

A style which was developed by a woman originally, Wing Chun uses relaxation, deflection and avoidance so it is perfect for smaller people against bigger and stronger attackers.

Was looking for a new Wing Chun group for a long time. What struck me great about Tim and the team was how welcoming they were. It’ve not trained in many years but with Tims guidance I felt the ability I once had coming back quickly. Tim himself is insane, decades of training, a dude you know could absolutely wipe you out, he knows just as well how to use adaptive power to produce excellent results. The right amount, at the right time. Not only can I get self-defense but a place where I feel I’m around others who are excited to be there and I connect with. Highly recommend!

Having trained in various martial arts for several years before finding Tim, I can honestly say his classes are a standout. While Tim clearly has a massive amount of expertise, his friendly and approachable teaching style means you never feel pressured; you can progress at a pace that actually suits you. Because my work schedule sometimes made it difficult to attend the regular group sessions, I decided to sign up for private 1-on-1 lessons—and it’s a decision I haven’t regretted for a second. I still love the energy of the group classes, but these focused one-hour sessions with Tim have allowed me to really dive deep and refine my Wing Chun techniques in a way that isn’t possible in a larger setting. It is definitely great value for money for anyone looking to sharpen their skills. Tim is a fantastic mentor who is genuinely invested in his students’ growth, and I’d highly recommend his private coaching to anyone.

I started private Wing Chun/self-defence lessons with Tim back in November and have done about 12 hours of one-to-one sessions so far, and it’s been a really great experience. I wasn’t originally planning on learning a martial art, I just wanted to improve my self-defence and confidence, but Tim’s teaching style made it really enjoyable and easy to stick with. He explains everything clearly and keeps things practical and simple, so nothing feels overwhelming or unrealistic. The techniques are broken down step by step and actually feel useful for real-life situations. The sessions are relaxed but still challenging, and because they’re private, everything’s tailored to what you want to work on. I’ve definitely built more confidence, and awareness since starting. I ended up enjoying it so much that I’ve now started going to the regular classes as well. Tim’s patient, friendly, and genuinely wants you to improve. Would 100% recommend the private lessons to anyone thinking about getting into self-defence..
