Martial Arts Styles Used in Private Training
My approach to private martial arts training draws from several complementary systems, each offering unique benefits for self-defence and personal development.
Wing Chun Kung Fu – 30 Years of Experience

I first found a Wing Chun school in 1993 and trained under the same instructor for over 20 years. Wing Chun Kung Fu is the foundation of my training and teaching.
Wing Chun is a close-range martial art designed for efficiency, structure, and practicality. It focuses on:
- Direct, economical movement
- Strong body mechanics rather than strength
- Close-quarter striking and defence
- Sensitivity, awareness, and timing
- Fast hand strikes and low kicks – perfect for self defence
This makes Wing Chun particularly suitable for adults looking for realistic self-defence rather than competition or athletic performance. Wing Chun is designed to be learned quickly. It focuses on direct striking down the centreline, both defending and attacking simultaneously.
Chi sau (sticky hands) gives you a reflex reaction which becomes automatic and spontaneous very quickly due to the drills and training tools within the system.
Aikido – Balance, Control & Redirection
I am currently training in Aikido, a Japanese martial art that emphasises:
- Balance and posture
- Redirecting force rather than meeting it head-on
- Joint control and movement
- Wrist and arm locks/throws
Aikido adds an important dimension to private martial arts training by developing control, body awareness, and non-resistant responses to force. In particular I help my private students learn practical wrist locks/attacks from grabs.
Kali (Filipino Martial Arts)
I also train in Kali, part of the Filipino Martial Arts system.
Kali focuses on:
- Movement and footwork
- Hand-eye coordination
- Weapon awareness (sticks, knives, improvised tools)
- Flow between armed and unarmed techniques
This makes Kali extremely valuable for modern self-defence, improving awareness, adaptability, and reaction speed. Kali drills help improve co-ordination and reflex response which become automatic, much like similar Wing Chun drills.
Who Am I?

Hi my name’s Tim Halloran and I’m a former stuntman. I have always been passionate about the martial arts but also studied a number of styles for the stunt business.
Alongside Wing Chun, Aikido, and Kali, I have trained in a variety of other martial arts, giving me a broad and well-rounded understanding of combat systems, including:
- Taekwondo – Kicking, balance, and distance management
- Karate – Structured striking and discipline
- Ninjitsu – Strategy, movement, and situational awareness
- Judo – Throws, balance, and grappling principles
- Iaido – Precision, posture, and mental focus
This cross-training allows private sessions to be adaptable, drawing on what works best for the individual rather than rigidly following a single system.
