Why is private martial arts training a good idea? Private training is a good solution if you can’t make a regular class. A private class can give you more in-depth training time in a shorter period than you can achieve with a normal class with other beginners.
With a normal class, you have multiple training partners. But seldom are most of these training partners at a high level. As you progress in a regular class, and become more senior in experience, you naturally gravitate towards teaching beginner students. This process can be limiting and private training can give you a much faster progression.
Private Martial Arts Training – Downsides
The downside of doing only private martial arts training is you don’t get experience with multiple opponents. With a room full of students, everyone gives you something slightly different. This is a better model for a real life scenario where an attacker can throw unexpected attacks.
With a 1 on 1 private martial arts class you only have one “attacker”. Even a highly trained person can’t replicate the randomness and sometimes even clumsiness of having multiple other people to experience from.
So, in an ideal world you would have both a regular class, with multiple students to practice with, and private martial arts training as well!
Private Martial Arts Training & Wing Chun
On a positive note, not having other beginners to link arms with means you won’t learn any mistakes which would need to be corrected later on. If you’re learning a martial art, such as Wing Chun Kung Fu, you’ll need time to learn the basic pattern drills which give you a natural and automatic response in Chi Sau (sticky hands).
In a regular class this takes longer to learn because you’ll be linking arms with less senior students. With a private session you get more direct tuition. You’ll learn more quickly, and without picking up mistakes which need to be corrected later.
During a private Wing Chun lesson you’ll start with some basics depending on whether you have already some Wing Chun experience. This might be drills such as Poon Sau, Dan Chi Sau and Lap Sau exercise. See Wing Chun Chi Sau for more on these drills.
