Private Kung Fu Lessons – Who Am I?
My name’s Tim Halloran and I’ve been teaching Kung Fu for over 10 years. The style of Kung Fu I teach is Wing Chun. I originally started my Wing Chun studies in 1993 and trained in the lineage of Ip Chun with Sifu Colin Ward.
More recently I have been training in the lineage of Chu Shong Tin through Daniel Parr of the Sung Wing Chun school in Sheffield.
I run a Wing Chun school in Leeds and Bradford, see the main website here for details of classes.
What Is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun has low kicks and fast hand techniques and is based on economy of motion and minimum movement.
It’s thought to have originated from Ng Mui – a nun who escaped the Shaolin Monastary during the Qing Dynasty.
Ng Mui was a master of several martial arts who condensed her knowledge into a system which could be learned quickly.
She taught it to Yim Wing Chun, a woman whom the style is named after.
Wing Chun is a soft style which uses evasion and deflection. It’s suitable for smaller people for use against bigger, stronger attackers. Knee kicks and eye strikes are also used. This makes Wing Chun most effective for a street confrontation, rather than for sport.
How Do We Train?
Wing Chun Kung Fu is taught using:
- Forms – movements which can be trained alone
- Drills – hand and body drills which train movements into the subconscious to make them automatic
- Chi Sau – a sticky hands drill which is similar to putting a fight into a game scenario
- Street – Street oriented attacks to practice defence and counter movements
The “heart” of Wing Chun is Chi Sau (Sticky hands practice). This is where you can practice your movements against a “live” opponent to develop sensitivity and use of energy. See also Wing Chun Chi Sau

Depending on your needs and previous experience, we can arrange a regular training program which is suitable. If you just want some self defence training in just a few sittings, just let me know and we will arrange a suitable syllabus to meet your needs.
Or if you want to learn Wing Chun on an ongoing basis, we can also do this. I also offer regular classes in Bradford and Leeds on Monday’s and Wednesday’s and run beginners courses throughout the year. Private sessions are available through the week (daytime) and on weekends.
See the main website for details of evening classes or visit the contact page to get in touch.
