Some of my students are Wing Chun focused, and have a longer term approach in learning this art. So I will teach them Siu Lim Tao as a starting point. This is the first hand pattern of the Wing Chun system.

My Martial Arts Journey

Over the years, I’ve trained in a wide range of martial arts, each contributing to my personal approach to MMA and self defence:
Wing Chun – My core discipline and the foundation of my teaching. Wing Chun is fast, efficient, and highly practical in close-range situations. I also have a dedicated Wing Chun school in Leeds.
Karate – I trained in Karate for 2 years before finding Wing Chun. I personally found that Wing Chun was more suitable for self defence scenarios.
Taekwondo – Similar to Karate but with more emphasis on long range kicks.
Ninjitsu – Strategy, awareness, and adaptability in unpredictable situations.
Aikido – Flow, redirection, and using an opponent’s force to your advantage. I often show my students aikido locks and wrist traps – useful for self defence situations
Kali / Escrima – Filipino stick and knife arts – I find students like a variety of training and weapons are always a fun thing to train with.
Judo – I trained Judo when I was very young and it is useful for throws and grappling.
Which Art Is “Best”?
Different arts are useful in different situations. For me, it has always been about self preservation and a focus on self defence. Most problems occur when you are in a weak position (alone or in the dark), or in crowds where alcohol is involved such as outside clubs and in taxi ranks, for example.
In dangerous situations you want to be able to avoid if possible, or spot a potential problem early, so you can escape unharmed. If not, you don’t want to go to the ground.
There may be more than one attacker. Wing Chun is one of the simplest systems to learn and one of the most effective. A strike to a vulnerable part of the body allows a quick exit, and the maximum damage from the minimum amount of strength.
