The advantage of 1 to 1 self defence is that you can learn much more quickly than in a class surrounded only by beginners. Having the personal contact with a senior instructor means you’ll get rapid progression.
There’s benefit to attending classes too, of course, and you’ll get a variety of training partners through class sessions. However in the early learning period having private self defence sessions can rapidly increase the rate of your learning curve.
Here’s some of the things you’ll learn:
- Proper stance – correct posture and stance gives you the maximum efficiency of both absorbing force and delivery of power
- Proper positions and connectivity – connecting your hand positions with your stance
- Chi Sau practice – Chi Sau allows you to “play” in a safe environment while learning fighting strategies in close quarters
- Power generation – using correct alignment of positions and stance
- Absorbing force – through the arms and body
- Most common attacks, defence and counter attacks
- Conflict de-escalation and avoidance
